vul|can|ize «VUHL kuh nyz», verb, -ized, -iz|ing.
–v.t.
1. to treat (rubber) with sulfur or a sulfur compound and heat it to make it more elastic and durable. Rubber is sometimes treated with a large amount of sulfur and intense heat in order to harden it, as in the preparation of vulcanite.
2. to repair (a rubber tire or tube) by using heat and chemicals to fuse the patch.
3. to treat (rubber) with sulfur or a sulfur compound, but without subjecting it to heat.
4. to treat (a substance) by an analogous process, as for hardening.
–v.i.
to undergo the process of vulcanizing.
